Why International Business?

The international business major combines a solid base of one of six functional areas with language study, international experience and academic studies in international business. Students in international business learn about the culture and management methods that differ around the globe. They also study the business practices of other nations and learn how international trade laws affect the world economy. Our goal is to graduate students who will change the world.

Nebraska students in England

The International Business curriculum uses a four-prong approach to preparing students to purposely and effectively serve businesses as global citizens.

1. Coursework:
- Functional Area: 15 credit hours of business courses selected from one of the following functional area options: General International Business, Economics, Management, Finance, Marketing, or Supply Chain Management.
- International Business courses: 12 credit hours of international business courses from the specified list for the selected functional area option.

2. Global Immersion:
Complete a semester (13-weeks) studying abroad - BSAD 70.

3. Language Study:
Complete the equivalent of 8 credit hours of foreign language, which may be completed during the global immersion experience - BSAD 71. International students may choose to improve their English proficiency by taking additional English courses beyond the required English courses.

4. International Internship/Practicum:
Participate in an internationally focused internship or practicum experience - BSAD 72.

Global Leadership Minor

Earn a Global Leadership Minor from the College of Business. Open to all Nebraska students.

A 12 credit hour minor (no prerequisites) and students will study abroad for at least 3 credit hours).

BSAD 320 – Global Issues (3 cr., available online in the summer) Learn about how world hunger, climate change, poverty and other issues present opportunities for the global leader.
BSAD 420 – Global Leadership and the Culture Map (3 cr., available online in the summer) Learn to develop an international business plan in a project-based course and how culture shapes our choice of strategy.
MGNT 414 – Leadership in a Global Context (3 cr., fall and spring Semesters; face-to-face) Become a resonant leader at the global level by mastering emotional intelligence and how to lead change.
BSAD 491 or other College of Business approved course tied to a study abroad project or trip (e.g. 3 cr., International Studies in Business and Economics)

Global Immersion offers a practical international context applicable to any* degree program.

International business majors can incorporate this coursework into the major so the Global Leadership minor is unavailable.

Global Immersion

Students in Brazil

International Business students are required to complete a Global Immersion experience and are encouraged to participate in a College of Business-sponsored Global Immersion program to complete the requirement. Many business programs abroad incorporate the Language and Internship/Practicum requirements (where available) into the design of the program, making them a great fit for International Business students.

International Business Medallion Program


The International Business Medallion Program (IBMP) is designed for all business students who wish to enhance their international education outside of the classroom. The Medallion Program focuses on well-rounded engagement by earning points in three areas: Career Building, Global Citizenship, and Well-Being.

Medallion Program

Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum level Medallions are determined by the points earned in each area. No academic credit is awarded in the Medallion Program. However, the skills and experiences developed by full participation are worth noting on a resume.

Student Organization

The Husker International Business Club organizes activities to enhance and complement the international business major, providing opportunities for students to meet with other students in the major as well as with business professionals with international expertise. The club also strives to help expand cultural horizons of students studying any major through exploring traditions and customs of different cultural groups.

International Business Fellows

International Business Fellows are select group of faculty members that teach international courses, conduct international-related research, and lead global immersion programs. They are no doubt on the frontlines of global education at the College of Business. They create and sustain global immersion programs, increase international research and teaching activities, and mentor students in international-related matters. The International Business Program places a strong emphasis on interdisciplinary learning. As such, IB Fellows are tapped from all business departments and encouraged to work across fields within and outside the College of Business. They bring their expertise and creative imagination to advance the goals of the International Business Program.

Husker International Brain Trust

The Trust are a select group of passionate individuals from all walks of life who leverage their experiences to advance the mission of the International Business Program. Most of them live abroad and remotely provide professional mentorship to students.

Advisory Board

The Advisory Board are alumni, friends and professionals who are passionate about contributing to student learning and international experience. The advisory board are a select of group of individuals with deep and extensive international experience (15 years or more). They bring a wealth of experience and fresh perspectives, and their advice enriches the international business curriculum. They engage with students both in and out of the classroom, and assist with efforts to secure the future of our programs. They want to see the next generation of Huskers succeed.
