Nebraska Business alumni from across the country flocked to Howard L. Hawks Hall on Saturday, September 23 for the first alumni tailgate in the new University of Nebraska–Lincoln College of Business building preceding the Nebraska vs. Rutgers football game. Many of the more than 200 in attendance entered the new facility for the first time. In addition to tailgate attendees, more than 60 additional guests showed up for an actuarial science alumni reunion held simultaneously with the tailgate.

Nearly 400 University of Nebraska–Lincoln students received special recognition and academic achievement awards at the College of Business Honors Ceremony on Sunday, September 17. Distributed by Dr. Donna Dudney, associate dean for undergraduate curriculum and programs and associate professor of finance, and Dr. D’vee Buss, assistant dean for undergraduate programs, 80 students received one of three awards including the William Gold Scholar Award, Clifford M. Hicks Scholar Award and James E. LeRossignol Scholar Award. Held for the first time in the fall semester and in Howard L. Hawks Hall, business students who received a total of more than $550,000 in scholarships, and seniors in the Clifton Strengths Institute Clifton Builders Program and student strength coaches were also honored.

Enrollment at the new College of Business at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln climbed to 4,462 students this fall. A 14.8 percent increase in first-time freshmen students – with 839 joining the college as of September – spurred the growth. In five years, first-time freshmen have increased by 29.5 percent.

The new College of Business Huskers Shop opened its doors in Howard L. Hawks Hall and in doing so, started one of the most innovative business learning programs in the country. A joint effort with Nebraska Athletics, the College of Business and Fanatics, the Huskers Shop also includes a faculty advisor, a six-member student management board, students who work in the store and merchandise ranging from shirts and hats to the new plastic bags required in all Huskers athletic facilities to pom poms and fidget spinners. Though there are other stores on college campuses run by students, what makes the Huskers Shop stand out – besides the high-level partners involved – is that Fanatics also provides the business retail and financial data for professors and students to use and analyze in various business courses.

The 773 undergraduates who received this honor maintained a cumulative grade-point average of 3.6 or higher for the semester. Student teams at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln College of Business Administration competed in the 2017 Union Pacific (UP) case competition, delivering presentations to UP executives to make recommendations on investing in the emerging sage grass market. Teams received the case summary at 8:30 a.m. and had until noon to consult with UP managers, build a business plan and create a power point presentation. During the afternoon the four teams presented their plans for a half-hour each to the executives.

The faculty at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln College of Business Administration recently approved changes to the undergraduate curriculum. Beginning in the fall of 2017, BSAD 150, Business Computer Applications will change to BSAD 50, and the Business Analytics/Information Analysis (SCMA 350) course will include an additional one-credit hour lab, SCMA 350L. BSAD 50 will provide more flexibility for students to complete the requirement in an online format, and SCMA 350/350L was updated to ensure students are best prepared for the demands of the business environment.

The college also recognized 222 undergraduate students for achieving a 4.0 GPA. Twenty-one master of business administration students qualified for the Dean’s List with a 4.0 GPA and nine or more credit hours for the semester, and 58 students with a 4.0 GPA and six or more credit hours made the Honor Roll.

There were 429 schools listed in the latest rankings based on an assessment survey conducted in the spring of 2014.
